Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a large pot, boil the sliced potatoes in salted water for about 10 minutes or until just tender. Drain and set aside.
  • In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until softened and translucent.
  • Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir to combine. Cook for an additional minute to eliminate the raw flour taste.
  • Gradually add the milk, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens. Season with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

Assembly

  • In a large baking dish, layer half of the boiled potatoes evenly across the bottom.
  • Spread half of the tuna evenly over the potatoes, followed by half of the frozen peas and a third of the cheese.
  • Pour half of the sauce mixture over this layer, ensuring it covers evenly.
  • Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients: potatoes, tuna, peas, cheese, and sauce.
  • Top with breadcrumbs if desired for a crunchy texture.

Cooking

  • Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  • Remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Consider adding different types of cheese for variety or using fresh cooked fish instead of canned tuna. Ensure to season layers as you build the dish.
