For the mixture

  • 1 pound ground beef Can be substituted with ground chicken or turkey for a lighter version.
  • 1 jalapeño, minced Adjust for desired heat level.
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or pepper jack) Use high-quality cheese for better flavor.
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon cumin
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten

For garnishing

  • Fresh cilantro For garnish

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, minced jalapeño, chopped onion, minced garlic, and shredded cheese.
  • Add the breadcrumbs, cumin, chili powder, paprika, salt, black pepper, and the beaten egg into the mixture.
  • Mix all ingredients thoroughly until well combined.

Cooking

  • Preheat your frying pan over medium heat and add enough olive oil to lightly cover the bottom.
  • Form the mixture into small balls, about the size of golf balls, and gently place them into the hot oil.
  • Fry the donkey balls in batches, turning them occasionally until they are golden brown all over, which should take about 8-10 minutes.
  • Once cooked, remove them from the pan and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  • Serve warm, garnished with fresh cilantro.

Notes

You can prepare these ahead of time and refrigerate the formed balls before frying. For a vegetarian version, substitute ground beef with black beans or lentils.
