Ingredients

For the Sloppy Joe Filling

  • 1 large loaf large loaf of Italian or French bread
  • 1 pound ground beef (or turkey)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 medium green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon mustard
  • to taste Salt and pepper

For the Garlic Butter

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced (for garlic butter)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
  • to taste Shredded cheese (optional)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Slice the loaf of bread in half lengthwise. Remove some of the bread insides to create a hollowed-out area for the Sloppy Joe filling.

Cooking

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until fully cooked. Drain any excess fat.
  • Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté until the vegetables soften, about 4-5 minutes.
  • Stir in minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  • Add tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, chili powder, mustard, salt, and pepper to the meat mixture. Stir to combine and simmer for about 5-7 minutes until heated through and thickened.
  • While the beef mixture simmers, prepare the garlic butter. In a small bowl, combine softened butter with minced garlic and a pinch of salt.
  • Spread the garlic butter mixture generously over each half of the bread.
  • Spoon the Sloppy Joe filling evenly onto the prepared bread halves. Optionally, sprinkle shredded cheese over the top.
  • Place the bread on a baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the edges are golden and the cheese is melted.
  • Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly. Garnish with chopped parsley before slicing into pieces.
