Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound beef steak, cut into bite-sized pieces Choose cuts like sirloin or ribeye for tenderness.
  • 4 medium potatoes, peeled and sliced thin Thin slices help them cook evenly.
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or your favorite) Feel free to mix cheeses.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • to taste Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish) Use for presentation.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat.
  • Add the steak pieces and sear them on all sides until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the steak and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, add chopped onions and garlic, sauté for 2-3 minutes until onions are translucent.

Layering and Baking

  • Layer half of the potatoes in the bottom of a large baking dish.
  • Sprinkle half of the salt, pepper, paprika, thyme, and rosemary over the potatoes.
  • Spread the cooked steak over the layer of potatoes.
  • Add a layer of sautéed onions and garlic over the steak.
  • Pour half of the beef broth over the layers.
  • Spread the remaining potatoes on top and sprinkle the rest of the spices.
  • Pour the remaining beef broth evenly over the top layer.
  • Spoon the sour cream over the casserole, spreading it evenly.
  • Top with shredded cheese.
  • Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and cheese is bubbly and golden.
  • Allow to cool for 5-10 minutes before serving.
