Ingredients

For the cookie dough

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Room temperature for better incorporation.
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips High-quality chocolate recommended.

For the caramel layer

  • 1 cup salted caramel sauce Store-bought or homemade.
  • Flaky sea salt for sprinkling To enhance saltiness.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9x13 inch baking dish by lining it with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, mixing until just combined after each addition. Then, add the vanilla extract and blend until smooth.
  • In another bowl, mix all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually incorporate this into the wet mixture, stirring just until combined; do not overmix.
  • Gently fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips.

Assembly

  • Spread half of the cookie dough in the prepared baking dish, smoothing the top to create an even layer.
  • Drizzle the salted caramel sauce over the first layer of cookie dough, spreading evenly but leaving some gaps.
  • Add the remaining cookie dough by spoonfuls over the caramel layer, gently spreading it to cover most of the caramel.
  • Sprinkle flaky sea salt on top.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until edges are golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out mostly clean.
  • Allow the bars to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then lift them out using the parchment paper and let cool completely on a wire rack.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature butter and avoid overmixing to keep the bars chewy. Experiment with different chocolate types and add nuts for variations.
