Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb ground sausage (mild, sweet, or hot Italian)
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 1 small green bell pepper, diced
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce
  • 32 oz high-quality marinara sauce
  • 8 oz pizza sauce
  • 3/4 lb penne pasta
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese Shred from a block for best results
  • 25 slices pepperoni
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • a pinch red pepper flakes

Instructions

Preparation

  • Prepare your workspace by measuring out all ingredients.

Cooking the Pasta

  • Boil a large pot of water, add the penne and cook it for one minute less than the package instructions recommend for al dente.

Meat and Veggies

  • In a large skillet set to medium-high heat, add ground beef, sausage, and diced onion. Sauté for about four minutes before adding the diced green bell pepper. Cook for an additional five minutes or until the meat is browned and vegetables are tender. Drain the excess grease.

Adding Flavorings

  • Reduce heat to medium. Pour in beef broth and scrape the bottom/sides of the skillet. Stir in minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, and dried herbs. Heat for one minute.

Mix in Sauces

  • Add marinara sauce and pizza sauce to the skillet. Stir well to combine and let simmer over low heat.

Combining

  • Once pasta is ready, drain it and gently fold it into the sauce mixture, ensuring everything is incorporated evenly.

Baking

  • Grease a 9 x 13-inch casserole dish lightly. Pour pasta mixture in, top with shredded mozzarella and arrange pepperoni slices on top. Cover with foil and bake in preheated oven at 375°F for 10 minutes. Remove foil and bake uncovered for another 15 minutes. Optionally broil for one minute for a crispy topping.

Serving

  • Once out of the oven, sprinkle with fresh parsley and extra Parmesan cheese before serving.

Notes

For best results, use quality ingredients and feel free to customize toppings to your taste. Make ahead for convenience, and store leftovers properly.
