Ingredients
  

For the cookies

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • Zest of 2 medium-sized oranges
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For the icing (optional)

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons fresh orange juice

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add the eggs, one at a time, and mix until fully incorporated. Then, stir in the orange zest.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.

Baking

  • Drop tablespoon-sized portions of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them a couple of inches apart.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are slightly golden. The centers will look soft.
  • Remove from the oven and let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Icing (optional)

  • While the cookies cool, you can prepare the icing if desired. Mix the powdered sugar with fresh orange juice until smooth, then drizzle over the cooled cookies.

Notes

To ensure perfect cookies, use fresh oranges for zest and juice, and avoid overmixing the dough. Chill the dough for 30 minutes before baking for thicker cookies. Store in an airtight container at room temperature.
