Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 4 teaspoons Dutch-processed cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon Diamond Crystal kosher salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 ounce milk or dark chocolate, broken into pieces or 2 tablespoons chocolate chips, divided
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Preparation

  • Gather all your ingredients on the countertop.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and kosher salt.
  • In a 12-ounce mug, place half of the chocolate pieces and the cut pieces of butter. Microwave on 50% power, stirring every 30 seconds, until fully melted, about 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Once melted, add the dry mixture to the mug, along with the beaten egg and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.

Cooking

  • Microwave the mug on 50% power until the cake has doubled in size, about 50 to 70 seconds.
  • Gently press the remaining chocolate pieces into the center of the cake and microwave for an additional 15 to 30 seconds.
  • Allow the mug cake to rest for about 2 minutes before enjoying.

Notes

For serving, consider adding ice cream, whipped cream, or fresh berries. You can customize the mug cake flavor by incorporating peanut butter or spices. Store leftovers at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to 2 days, or freeze for up to a month.
