  • 1 box milk chocolate cake mix Use your preferred brand.
  • 2 teaspoons instant coffee Enhances chocolate flavor.
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, softened Room temperature for easy mixing.
  • 3 cups powdered sugar For frosting.
  • 6 ounces milk To dissolve the instant coffee for frosting.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to the temperature indicated on the cake mix box.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the milk chocolate cake mix with the instant coffee.
  • Prepare the cake mix according to the box instructions, substituting water with the prepared coffee.

Baking

  • Pour the batter into cupcake liners, filling them about two-thirds full.
  • Bake according to the box instructions, usually 18-22 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Let them cool in the tin for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Frosting

  • Cream the softened butter in a mixing bowl until light and fluffy.
  • Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing continuously until creamy.
  • Dissolve a rounded teaspoon of instant coffee in the milk and add three tablespoons to the butter-sugar mixture. Mix until smooth.

Frosting the Cupcakes

  • Frost the completely cooled cupcakes using a Wilton 2D tip.

Serving

  • Serve your mocha cupcakes on a decorative platter or cake stand.
  • Pair with freshly brewed coffee or espresso.
