Ingredients

  • 1 cup 2 sticks unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 ½ cups powdered sugar confectioners’ sugar, sifted
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 –3 tablespoons milk or heavy cream
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

Beat the butter

  • Place the softened butter in a large mixing bowl. Using a stand mixer or hand mixer, beat on medium speed for 2–3 minutes until the butter is light, fluffy, and pale in color.

Add powdered sugar gradually

  • Lower the mixer speed and slowly add the powdered sugar, about ½ cup at a time. This helps prevent a sugar cloud and ensures even mixing. Continue beating until fully incorporated.

Mix in vanilla and salt

  • Add the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Mix again until combined. These two ingredients round out the flavor and balance the sweetness.

Adjust the consistency

  • Add milk or heavy cream, one tablespoon at a time, and mix on medium speed until the icing is smooth and spreadable. For a stiffer consistency (ideal for piping), use less liquid; for a softer texture, add a bit more.

Whip until fluffy

  • Turn the mixer to high and whip for another 1–2 minutes. The icing should look light, silky, and hold its shape.
