Ingredients
  

For the shrimp

  • 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined Use fresh or fully thawed frozen shrimp.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup cold water Gradually whisk into the batter.
  • Oil for frying Enough to submerge the shrimp halfway.

For the sauce

  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional) For a bit of heat.

For garnish

  • Chopped green onions For garnish.

Preparation

  • In a medium bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, and black pepper until thoroughly combined.
  • Gradually whisk in the cold water, keeping the mixture smooth to form a batter that clings to the shrimp.
  • Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat.

Cooking the shrimp

  • Dip each shrimp into the batter, allowing any excess to drip off.
  • Carefully place the battered shrimp into the hot oil and fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
  • Use a slotted spoon to remove the shrimp and set them on paper towels to drain excess oil.

Making the sauce

  • In a separate saucepan, combine honey, minced garlic, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and red pepper flakes.
  • Bring the mixture to medium heat, whisking until bubbly and fragrant.

Serving

  • Toss the fried shrimp in the honey garlic sauce until evenly coated.
  • Serve warm, garnished with chopped green onions.
