Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef 450 g
  • 1 bag 30 oz frozen hash browns (850 g)
  • 1 can 10.5 oz cream of mushroom soup (300 g)
  • 1 cup sour cream 240 g
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese 200 g
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion 75 g
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or butter

Instructions

Prepare the Ground Beef

  • Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook, breaking it up into small pieces, until it’s browned (5-7 minutes).

Season the Beef

  • Once the beef is browned, stir in garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  • If you’re using onions, add them now and cook for an additional 3-5 minutes until the onions are softened and translucent.

Combine the Ingredients

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked beef mixture with cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, and 1 ½ cups of shredded cheddar cheese.
  • Stir in the frozen hash browns and mix everything together thoroughly.

Assemble the Casserole

  • Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Transfer the beef mixture into the dish, spreading it out evenly.
  • Sprinkle the remaining ½ cup of shredded cheese on top.

Bake the Casserole

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Cover the casserole with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  • After 30 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and golden.

Serve

  • Let the casserole rest for 5-10 minutes before serving to help it set and maintain its shape.
