For the Cake Layer:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup white granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup milk
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • Optional: ½ teaspoon espresso powder

For the Fudge Sauce:

  • ½ cup white granulated sugar
  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ¼ cups boiling water

Preheat Your Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch square baking pan.

Prepare the Cake Batter

  • In a bowl, mix together ½ cup sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, and espresso powder (optional). Add milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract, then whisk until smooth. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.

Make the Fudge Sauce

  • In a separate bowl, combine ½ cup sugar, brown sugar, and cocoa powder. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter. Pour boiling water over the top without stirring.

Bake the Cake

  • Bake for about 35 minutes, until the center is almost set and the pudding is bubbling underneath. Let the cake rest for 15 minutes before serving.

Serve and Enjoy

  • Spoon the cake into bowls, ensuring each portion includes some pudding sauce. Top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.
