Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened Ensure it's at room temperature for better mixing.
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs Use room temperature.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour Sift before measuring.
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda Dissolve in hot water.
  • 2 teaspoons hot water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups chocolate chips Can substitute with different chocolate types.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, white sugar, and brown sugar until smooth and fluffy (about 2-3 minutes).
  • Beat in the eggs one at a time, making sure each is fully incorporated before adding the next.
  • Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • In a small bowl, dissolve the baking soda in hot water and then add this mixture to the batter along with the salt.
  • Gradually stir in the all-purpose flour until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
  • Fold in the chocolate chips (and any nuts if desired).

Baking

  • Drop spoonfuls of dough onto ungreased baking pans, spacing them about two inches apart.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes, until golden around the edges but still soft in the center.
  • Let them cool on the pan for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Notes

For best results, chill your dough for at least 30 minutes before baking. Store cooled cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week or freeze for longer storage.
