Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups warm water (110-115°F)
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.75 tablespoon rapid rise yeast
  • 4 cups bread flour, plus more as needed Bread flour is key for the right texture.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Combine the warm water, oil, sugar, salt, and rapid rise yeast in a large mixing bowl.
  • Slowly mix in 2 cups of flour until blended.
  • Gradually add the remaining flour, half a cup at a time, mixing until the dough pulls away from the sides and feels smooth yet slightly tacky.
  • Knead the dough by hand or with a stand mixer for 5-7 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
  • Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover it with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm spot until it doubles in size (about 1 hour).

Shaping and Second Rise

  • Once the dough has risen, punch it down gently and divide it into six equal pieces.
  • Shape each piece into a ball and place them on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Make an 'X' cut on the top of each ball, cover lightly with a kitchen towel, and let them rise again for 30-45 minutes.

Baking

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F about 15 minutes before the second rise is done.
  • Bake the dough balls for approximately 15 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
  • Remove from the oven and let them cool on a rack completely.
  • Once cool, cut a circle out of the top of each bread ball and scoop out the soft insides to create a bowl.
