Bananas Foster

A classic New Orleans dessert made with caramelized bananas in a rich sauce, served warm over vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

  • 4 pieces ripe bananas, sliced in half lengthwise
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup banana liqueur (optional) Can be substituted with water
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • as needed scoops vanilla ice cream, for serving

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat, allowing it to foam.
  • Once melted, sprinkle in the brown sugar and cinnamon, stirring until smooth and bubbling.
  • Add the sliced bananas to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes until caramelized on one side, then flip and cook for another 2 minutes.
  • If using banana liqueur, carefully add it to the skillet, or use water and vanilla extract if not.
  • Ignite the liqueur or sauce for a flambé effect, and step back as the flames create a spectacle.
  • Once the flames die down, give the sauce a stir to combine thoroughly.
  • Serve the banana mixture warm over a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Notes

Serve immediately for best flavor. Consider garnishing with extra cinnamon or chopped nuts for added texture.
