  • 1 cup stone-ground grits Use stone-ground for best texture.
  • 4 cups chicken broth Can substitute with vegetable broth for a vegetarian option.
  • 1 cup shredded gouda cheese
  • 1 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • 2 large eggs Large eggs are recommended.
  • 1 cup heavy cream For a creamier texture, increase this amount.
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted

Seasonings

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Chopped fresh herbs for garnish Optional garnish.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • In a medium saucepan, bring the chicken broth to a boil. Slowly whisk in the grits and reduce the heat to low. Cook, stirring frequently, until thickened and creamy, about 20-25 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and stir in the melted butter, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, and smoked paprika.
  • Allow the mixture to cool slightly, then whisk in eggs one at a time, followed by the heavy cream. Finally, fold in the shredded gouda and cheddar cheeses.

Baking

  • Pour the grits mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden and the edges start to pull away from the sides.

Serving

  • Let the dish rest for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired.
