  • 2 large large onions Sweet onions like Vidalia or yellow onions are recommended.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Can substitute with whole wheat or gluten-free flour.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika Smoked paprika can be used for richer flavor.
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (panko recommended) Panko creates a lighter, crispy texture.
  • as needed Cooking spray or oil spray Essential for achieving crispiness.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Peel the onions and slice them into thick rings, about half an inch thick for optimal crispiness.
  • In a bowl, mix the flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper to create a flavorful coating.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs until well combined.
  • Place the breadcrumbs in another bowl. Optionally, season with extra spices.

Coating

  • Dip each onion ring into the flour mixture, coating it fully, then into the egg mixture, allowing any excess to drip off.
  • Roll each onion ring in the breadcrumbs until fully coated, pressing gently to ensure they stick.

Cooking

  • Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  • Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Arrange onion rings in a single layer, ensuring they do not overlap.
  • Lightly spray the tops of the onion rings with oil.
  • Cook for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.

Serving

  • Once cooked, remove the onion rings and serve immediately with dips like ranch, ketchup, or BBQ sauce.

Notes

Store leftover onion rings in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 3-5 minutes to restore crispiness. For longer storage, consider freezing before cooking.
