Ingredients

For the blooming onion

  • 1 large large onion (preferably a sweet variety)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large large eggs
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably panko for extra crunch)
  • as needed Cooking spray For spraying the onion before cooking

Instructions

Preparation

  • Start by peeling the onion carefully to avoid damaging the layers. Cut off the top of the onion, about one inch from the root, leaving the root intact.
  • Turn the onion upside down and make cuts from the bottom towards the top at about 1/2 inch intervals, ensuring not to cut through the root.
  • Prepare a mixing bowl and combine flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.
  • In another bowl, crack the eggs and whisk them until smooth.
  • Place the breadcrumbs in a separate dish, ready for coating.

Coating

  • Dip the prepared onion into the flour mixture, ensuring that all the petals are well-coated. Shake off any excess flour.
  • Next, dip the floured onion into the egg mixture, allowing the excess to drip off.
  • Coat the onion with breadcrumbs, pressing gently to ensure they stick to the surface.
  • Spray the onion generously with cooking spray to help it crisp up during cooking.

Cooking

  • Place the coated onion in the air fryer basket, ensuring it doesn’t touch the sides.
  • Set the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) and cook for about 15-20 minutes, flipping the onion halfway through to ensure even cooking.
  • Adjust cooking time as needed until golden brown and crispy.
  • Carefully remove the onion from the air fryer and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
